M1.2 Research Project

Meria the Shrinking Hanger

In this project, I took a research-through-design approach to motivate people to do a work-out. I started with ideation through sketching, which is one of my preferred methods. I then combined this with a literature review, using the design strategy ‘the Aesthetic of Friction’ for my project, which shaped my professional identity for the rest of my master’s. In this project, I learned how to deal with quantitative data by doing a big survey in collaboration with another group and qualitative data by deploying my prototype for 2 weeks. In this project my focus was on the aesthetics of my prototype, leading to a long prototyping journey with a focus on technology, mechanics, and materiality. I found dealing with scientific information very hard before and during this project, especially writing it down coherently. But during this project and writing the paper for DIS2021 I learned a lot, and really started to enjoy this. This shaped me into the research-oriented designer I am today.
