Meria: A Shrinking Hanger

2020

Despite an intention to exercise, it remains a challenge for many people to establish a workout routine over some time. Amongst identified barriers and enablers to exercise, getting dressed for a workout is considered one of the tipping points of going.

Meria The Shrinking Hanger implements the Aesthetic of Friction, implying the right course of action for the user while allowing freedom and encouraging meaning-making. The interactive shrinking hanger is situated in the closet and dismisses clothes when one does not exercise as intended.

The user can hang their sports clothes, and according to their activity goals, the hanger will shrink in a few days, by lowering its arms. While this happens, the hanger tries to encourage the user to grab their clothes and go exercise, by letting the clothes slip more and more. When the clothes are ignored, the hanger will eventually drop the clothes on the ground.
